Sebum Cure: Everything You Need to Know

As I start writing this article, it's already been 15 days since the lockdown began in France, and a week since I last washed my hair . Yes, put like that, it sounds a little scary, and it seems strange that a shampoo brand would promote it.

In these lines, we will explain to you what a sebum treatment is, why it can be very beneficial for your hair, but also what mistakes to avoid to succeed in your treatment.

Please note : During the coronavirus crisis, and if your job requires contact with other people, it is not recommended to do a sebum treatment! Indeed, residue can get into your hair and contaminate you. Only do the treatment if you are confined to your home.

EDIT : I'm returning to this article after a few weeks to qualify these comments, having myself finished the treatment. Find my feedback here .

What is a sebum cure?

There are two ways to do sebum cures: either by spacing out your shampoos , or (and this is the most radical method, perfect for confinement), by not washing them for a given period of time. In the first case, we try to reduce our shampoos according to our current washing frequency: if you wash them every day, try every two days, then three, etc.

In the second case, you need to hold out for a long time, ideally at least two weeks, or even 21 days or a month.

What is important to understand is that sebum is very good for the hair and scalp.

The benefits of the sebum cure

Postponing shampooing, especially when using shampoos that contain sulfates and/or silicones, allows the scalp to better regulate itself. It also allows you to benefit from this natural (glamorous) oil to nourish your hair.

In the long term, we can often observe washes that last longer, softer and easier to style hair, and in the best case scenario, accelerated growth.

Before the sebum cure

It is important to have the most natural hair possible for the treatment, so beforehand we do a good shampoo , but we avoid masks, conditioners and other oils which will act as a barrier between your hair and the sebum.

During the sebum treatment

If there's one part of this article you MUST read before starting the cleanse, it's this one. Brushing your hair multiple times a day is absolutely vital for several reasons:

- Activate blood circulation in the scalp

- Spread the sebum on the lengths , which will nourish them

- Rid your hair of dust

When it comes to brushes, choose ones made from natural fibers like boar bristles, which are much softer. You should also clean your brush every day!

Also take the opportunity to massage your head with your fingers, gently and in circular motions. And it's relaxing too!

If your scalp itches even though you've followed all the above guidelines, your body is telling you to STOP! Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo, and you'll have other opportunities to repeat the treatment.

Don't hesitate to tie your hair up, but don't forget to air it at least twice a day! My favorite hairstyle during my treatment? The low bun! Otherwise, the scarf is your best friend.

After the cure

Yes, we're all going to be tempted to reach for our shampoo and conditioner, but be careful!

If you insist too much or use certain products, you will attack your scalp and cancel out the effects of the treatment.

After the treatment, it's the perfect time to switch to a more natural routine!

Shower Hair Gif

Always use a gentle shampoo, free of sulfates and silicones. Wash your hair once or twice, no more. Avoid using too many chemicals.

So, convinced? Don't hesitate to leave us your comments and tell us if you too have been tempted!

For my part, I will write you an article very soon about my feedback!

EDIT: Here is the link to my updated feedback . And it's not very positive.
